Written by Shuntasia Coleman | Sep 5, 2024 4:10:58 PM

This summer, I celebrated my third year living in Tulsa. Over the last few years, I’ve had the most amazing time discovering all this charming city has to offer. From savoring local flavors to enjoying special finds, I’ve learned that here, you can have a fantastic time without overspending.

Tulsa provides incredible opportunities for affordable adventures and memorable experiences. I’m excited to share my favorite local spots that prove you can experience the best of this city for $20 or less!

Free Classes and Activities to Energize Your Day

In Tulsa, there are so many opportunities to stay active and energized, and the best part is that many of these activities are completely free! I recently took a Tai Chi class at the Gathering Place, which was a wonderful way to start my day with some gentle movement and relaxation.

At Gathering Place, you can also take advantage of free paddle boat and kayak rentals, perfect for a leisurely day on the water while soaking in the park's beautiful surroundings. If you’re looking for more variety, Guthrie Green offers a range of free events, from yoga sessions to hip-hop cardio, Zumba, and even salsa dancing lessons, giving you plenty of ways to stay fit and have fun.

Arts and History

If you’re passionate about the arts and history, Tulsa has several cultural gems that you can experience without stretching your budget. For art lovers, 108 Contemporary is a must-visit, with free admission to vibrant local and regional works. I also enjoy visiting the Tulsa Artists' Coalition Gallery, where you can experience a diverse array of contemporary art from local artists at no cost. Guthrie Green also features seasonal outdoor art installations and performances. Additionally, every Friday, the Philbrook Museum of Art offers a great deal with $5 general admission after 5 PM.

To delve into the city’s rich architectural past, the Tulsa Foundation for Architecture provides engaging tours (offered at half-price for Tulsa Remote members) showcasing Tulsa’s unique architectural treasures. When I need a peaceful retreat, the beautiful and serene Woodward Park’s Garden and Conservatory is perfect for taking a walk and unwinding. Plus, the Mansion at Woodward Park is absolutely stunning.

For history enthusiasts, the Tulsa Black Wall Street Tour provides an in-depth look at the profound impact of Black Wall Street. This tour provides an intimate exploration of Black Wall Street’s rise, its vibrant community, and its tragic destruction in the 1921 race massacre. It’s a powerful way to understand the resilience and contributions of this historic neighborhood.

Intimate Spots for Live Music:

If you’re a fan of live music like I am, you’ll find plenty to enjoy in Tulsa. I  catch free jam sessions every second and fourth Wednesday of the month at LowDown in the Tulsa Arts District. For a cozy, intimate setting, check out Vintage Wine Bar’s Monday night jazz. Both venues provide a remarkable atmosphere for enjoying live music, and you’ll find many other local spots offering lively performances.

Social Spaces to Gather:

For an enjoyable social experience, the Gathering Place’s Sunset Social Hour is a standout choice. It’s held on the third Thursday of each month. The DJs always set a great vibe, and you can enjoy a complimentary drink while watching the sunset– all at no cost for entry.

I look forward to this event each month as a great opportunity to catch up with friends and make new connections. On top of that, Tulsa also offers a variety of local restaurants and bars where you can gather with friends, enjoy good food and drinks, and dive into the city’s welcoming social scene.

Whether you’re taking advantage of free classes, exploring affordable art venues, or hanging out at inviting social spots, there’s no shortage of ways to have a great time.
