A recent Homes.com article highlights how Claire Tomm and her family made the move from Wisconsin to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 2021 - and found community. Claire shares with Homes.com that her and her husband have found opportunities to plug in and explore side hustles - and cited that festivals and events with their children was a favorite way to spend time together.
Launched in 2018 by the George Kaiser Family Foundation, Tulsa Remote offers $10,000 to eligible remote workers who relocate to the city. Since then, more than 4,000 people have made the move, with 80% choosing to stay beyond their first year.
But the program’s success goes beyond the incentive.
Tulsa is drawing people in with its lower cost of living, vibrant downtown, and strong sense of community. Once they arrive, participants are encouraged to get involved through a three year coworking membership at Gradient, events, and local connections, helping them quickly put down roots.
That approach is working. Research shows participants contribute significant impact to the local economy: Remoters have collectively generated $878 million in direct employment income since the program's launch significantly contributing to Tulsa’s economic vitality.
At the same time, Tulsa continues to grow. Since 2020, the metro has added more than 42,000 residents, with steady housing demand and a diversifying economy across industries like aerospace, healthcare, and finance. Homes.com research cites that Tulsa's cost of living is 7.1% below the national average.
As more cities compete for remote workers, Tulsa stands out, not just for attracting people, but for building a community they want to stay in.
